The Australian Digital Alliance is excited to be bringing you its 2013 annual copyright forum, ‘Embracing the Digital Economy: creative copyright for a creative nation’. This year’s forum takes place at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra on Friday 1 March 2013 from 8:30am – 4:30pm, with pre-forum drinks on the evening of Thursday 28 February at the National Library of Australia.
About the 2013 ADA Forum – ‘Embracing the Digital Economy’
This year’s forum considers how Australia’s copyright framework fits in with the ‘digital world’. In 2012, European Union Commissioner Neelie Kroes delivered a speech on copyright and creativity, taking note the profound changes to the nature of creation and distribution in the digital age:
“Back then, creation and distribution were in the hands of the few. Now they are in the hands of everyone: democratising innovation, empowering people to generate and exchange ideas, supporting and stimulating huge creativity.
And now let’s remind ourselves what our objectives as policymakers should be for the creative sector:
We should help artists live from their art. Stimulate creativity and innovation. Improve consumer choice. Promote our cultural heritage. And help the sector drive economic growth.
We can’t look at copyright in isolation: you have to look at how it fits into the real world. So let’s ask ourselves: how well is the current system achieving those objectives, in the world we live in today?”
The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has been tasked with an Inquiry into Australia’s copyright framework, to determine whether existing exceptions are adequate and appropriate in the digital environment.
The ADA forum explores a variety of new technologies, business models and education and cultural services being provided online, and how they fit into our existing copyright framework. Featuring keynote presentations from New Zealand internet law expert and District Court Judge David Harvey, and highly regarded copyright academic Associate Professor Matthew Sag, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, as well as a diverse line up of panelists, the forum promises an engaging, thought-provoking discussion.
